I really don't question his training much either, because the man knows what he is doing, and is a pro at it. I'm glad to say I am a student of his association.

I met Jeff in Springfield ,Mo back in the early 90's.He is a class act and like someone else said one of a small few that actually tested for his 8th degree. To much politics for me ,just like Jeet Kune Do.

I would guess (by reading between the lines) that Mr. Speakman received his Kenpo black belt while training under Mr. Tatum at Mr. Parker's school...I don't know. Stay tuned.
I have been to Mr. Speakman's school in Vegas. He has a pic of Larry Tatum kicking him into black.
No one should doubt Mr. Speakman's legitimacy in the art.

I was a student at Ed Parker's School/Santa Monica from 1980- 1991. Jeff Speakman entered the school sometime after my start and studied directly with Larry Tatum and stayed at the school past Mr Tatums departure and all through the time that I was at that school. He helped Bryan Hawkins who became Head Instructor and taught regular classes and worked with specific students. I attained brown under Mr Tatum and after he left I was taught directly by Mr Speakman, sometime around 1985-86. I worked on my 1st Black belt under Mr. Speakman and received it in a test he ran on July 26, 1990 with Ed Parker in attendance along with Mr Hawkins, Mr Cornejo, Mr Sensenbrenner and Ms. Hale. For historical purposes I have a video of this test which I can share. This turned out to be the last black belt test that Mr Parker ran in the Santa Monica studio before his death the following December.

During that time Mr Parker had chosen students Hawkins, Speakman, Salantri and Hale to study privately with him at his home. As I understand it Mr Parker went over the entire Curriculum of Kenpo as it was known at that time with them. Also during that time Mr Speakman was developing plans for his first movie with the direct conceptual support of Mr Parker.

I was allowed to observe some of the filming. On a personal note Mr Speakman worked with me on my black belt once or twice a week at the studio and at my home for 2-3 years up through and passed receiving my black belt. I later went on to study with Mr Parker and Mr Trejo personally.

Please contact me if I can provide further information for you. You also might look under Kenpo on the Internet where Mr Tatum ran a black belt test with Mr Parker present in about 85-86. Of significance in that test was Mr Speakman as attacker up against Mr Bob Liles for Liles advanced Black Belt. Mr Speakman was most impressive against the awesome power and control of Mr Liles, a gentleman Mr Parker took note of for being big and yet able to kick powerful high kicks. Also for historical purposes Ms tanaka tested for 5th or 6th doing a magnificent form 6 which brought the audience to their feet. Mr Jack Autry and other senior black belts were in attendance. Contact each and everyone of them to verify the facts as I presented them.
    thank you. Michael Bobrow
