Purpose: Escape some of life/work stresses, increase focus
I would recommend to look up "Ramana Maharsi" and "self-inquiry" as search words online. Good place to start.
Clear mind, clear movement. Mastery of the Arts is mastery over the Self. That in this moment, this motion, the thoughts, memories, impulses and passions that cloud the mind must yield to the clarity of purpose, and purity of motion.
I suggest you learn some self-hypnosis, or a general relaxation method that leaves you awake.
I've given the entire procedure somewhere else on this forum. Maybe a search?
I do have a CD that was with the course I co-developed for Nightengale Conant called "The Centering Drill".
It works real well.
I have one or two copies of it lying around.
If you live in the US I'll send you one.

What sometimes happens with people who have a curiosity about meditation is that they don't first define their terms of what they want from going into that focus of concentration.
People normally want 3 things.
1. Physical progress.
2. Intellectual progress.
3. Spiritual progress.
Physical progress is the most basic form of advance. It can take many forms. It increases financial advances, improvements in housing, getting your body in better shape, or becoming one of the best people in Kenpo Karate in the worl.
