    Default Newbie video purchase

    Hi,

I just ordered the orange belt DVD, which is my first from the IKCA. Vic LeRoux mentioned in email that adults should start with that one, rather than the yellow belt video, but...are the techniques from the yellow belt DVD covered in subsequent vids? I feel I should know them, so I'm wondering if I should have bought the yellow belt vid anyway.

If you want to learn the techniques for yellow you would need that DVD.

The technqiues on the yellow are actually "Parker" tech's: Delayed Sword, Sword of Destruction, Obscure Wing, Lone Kimono, and Thrusting Salute. The techniques at orange are similar in that they teach the same principles as these, but if you want to learn them then by all means order the yellow belt DVD. It definately won't hurt! (That is unless you're on the recieving end of the technique, lol)

Otherwise, the material on the yellow DVD is also covered on the orange with some additions.

The system did not originally have a yellow belt it was later added by one of Mr. Parker's students as kind of a "quick" self-defense course and was not initially in the system as most seniors went through it. I personally think it had some commercial motivations for it's creation.

The basics on the orange belt videos are the same and actually more in depth then the basics and techniques in yellow belt. It is my understanding the IKCA uses the yellow belt for children and only for adults when adults they are having problems grasping the basics.

Personally I would not worry about it, just start at orange.

I have met and worked out with several good kenpoist who started the IKCA program at Orange....above all else it is the basics that are most important and they do have a focus on the basics!

    Good luck in your training!

I like it a lot so far. They go into considerable detail, showing different angles, etc, and explaining some of the reasons to do things in a particular way. The basics seem simple but I'm finding it takes more time to get really comfortable with them than I expected.

Agreed, what's represented on youtube is underwhelming. My recommendation would be to get the IKCA Black Belt video. Lot's on there about the Master Form including it done as a mass attack.

I am not a IKCA guy, but have reviewed all their videos, and believe the system has much to commend it. I would call it clean cut Kenpo.
