    Default MT: What if.....?

    What if.....?

    ====================

    What if "The Karate Kid" starring Ralph Macchio back in the early 1980's was title "The Kempo Kid" instead.

    Karate got a huge boom of new practitioners bacause of that movie. Now, many from that generation have their own karate schools and are the dominant generation that is teaching.

    I wonder what Kempo would be like today if that had been "The Kempo Kid" instead.

    Interesting question. I think any positive exposure that adds to the popularity of Kenpo would of course probably correspond to an increase in the number of commercial schools and thereby also the number of practicing Kenpoist.

    There would be both pro's and con's as a result though. It goes without saying that there would be a lot of us that would have issues with schools that we deemed to be "McDojo's" or "Black Belt Factories" and did not maintain a certain level of integrity within the art.

    But, on the 'plus' side, just as with BJJ, one can enjoy a certain level of legitamacy and pride being trained in a widely popular martial art.

    I think that much of "Kenpo/Kempo" speaks for itself. "Feeling is believing" I believe the quote goes.
    "It is sobering to reflect that one of the best ways to get yourself a reputation as a dangerous citizen these days is to go about repeating the very phrases which our founding fathers used in the struggle for independence." – Charles A. Beard

    they'd make a bigger splash.

    If beggars had horses,

    they couldn't afford to feed the things.

    If Kenpo had more movies,

    we'd be more about flash and looking good than doing any good.

    That’s not how I remember it ROFL

    I think to some degree your right but if a movie brought in enough people and exposed them to what Kenpo is all about at least some would stay.

    I have to admit Kenpo as a style never crossed my mind growing up; I knew nothing of this style. Then I went to see the perfect Weapon, I was blown away the rapid fire strikes and the way he took apart that couch with sticks. I new one day I was going to study that style. It just took longer than I hoped to be in a position too get involved.
