    Jeff Speakman and Kenpo 5.0

    ====================

    Looking at the Jan. 07 issue of Black Belt, there is an article on Jeff, one of his students, and his new Kenpo 5.0 material.

    I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on where he is taking the art. Lets not turn this into a bash session on the man.

    Mike

    There's also a thread on Members In Motion with Mr. Speakman on YouTube. What I saw there was pretty good.

    The thread on MT quickly degenerated into another bash/rehash/rebash of "learning by video," which is totally irrelevant to the point of the thread. I think Mr. Speakman is doing a good thing in addressing the MMA threat. I know of a couple of dirtbag gangsta wannabes in my general area that are doing MMA fights. Others will certainly try to copy what they see. It's there, and the AK grappling techs and training methods need to evolve to deal with it.

    There are things that are worth knowing for their own sake, worth finding for the pure joy of discovery.

    Well said, and yet another reason why I don't post anywhere else.

    His new dvds are not a 'train by dvd' thing.

    He can't be everywhere, so these help.

    He also has journals, with the moves written out and he goes to each school 3-4 times a year. We are all also strongly encouraged to visit any other Speakman school in the area to practice and are always invited to the Lake Arrowhead school to train. (No charge.)

    There is also the camp every year in June (can't wait for that).

    So it's not about learning by the videos, but like anyone else, having the videos is a great way to be sure that everyone is getting the same information.

    Then he comes through and tightens it up. I would imagine that anyone who has been training for enough years to become a black belt, should be able to look at the videos and learn from them. Then practice with other people and get the material. It's not like any of us are learning kenpo from scratch off of them.

    That'd be hard.

    I hear they have been shipped, so I'm holding my breath waiting. We're going to have a dvd party when they're done. If you're in the Sacramento area, let me know and you're invited.
