Default Variable Expansion - Dennis Conatser

This is for Dennis Conatser. I was fortunate enough to attend one fo his seminars back in 2000 and he did an amazing job defining Variable Expansion. I am sure everyone on this site could benefit from his breakdown of Variable Expansion. If you would please explain variable Expansion sir with as much detail as you feel is needed to help all levels understand this principle.

Well, the term actually says it all...... you take a topic and expand upon it with several variables. In some ways this is Family grouping or Master Keying.

Mr. Parker taught the equation formula and if you understand it... you can expand many variations of the techniques or drills as I call them and develop a greater understanding of our Art.

    Ok .....

Try prefixing all your techniques with a kick.....

Try suffixing all your techniques with a take down or choke hold....

Try all your right punch techniques with an added left punch combination attack...

Try all your kicking attack techniques with a block by a kick instead of an arm block...

Try preforming all your forms in reverse......

This is really the direction I have been exposed to in my time in Kenpo. The idea of learning "advanced stuff" should take a back seat to mastering the basic stuff.

nice.. i mainly suffix my attacks with a sweep or buckle, or shove. creating distance, getting them possibly to the ground. just incase they're still standing, as well as it's good way to practice those movements and principles from different positions..

Well, it should be the direction we all travel.... to get to the "advanced stuff" you must go thru thorough basic study and understanding, the better you are at the basics..... well, you find yourself doing advanced stuff......LOL

Are you saying that to continue learning advanced material is more important than mastering the basics? Explaining my question;getting them(the basics) down till you can add/subtract(as in basic mathmatics)with little thought. This you are oppossed to?

Red face Re: Variable Expansion - Dennis Conatser

    Sean,

I think I may of initially misread your post. I now see it as saying the advanced stuff "should" take a back seat to the mastery of the basics. My apologies...
